Issue Name: World Cup Willie's 40th Anniversary - Smilers

Producer: Buckingham Covers

On June 6th 2006, Royal Mail issued a set of stamps for the 40th Anniversary of the England’s World Cup victory. At the same time, they also released a new Smilers sheet. The sheet had 20 of the new 1st class England Football stamp and 20 different Smilers labels. The labels tell the whole story of England’s victory on 30th July 1966 in pictures - from the crowds arriving at the start to Bobby Moore holding up the cup.

This is our alternative cover for the World Cup Smilers. It features the 1966 mascot, World Cup Willie. Our illustration comes from a MaxiCard signed by Bobby Moore (for most collectors these days, that’s the closest you will get to owning his autograph!).We can fit 4 Smilers stamps and labels on one cover reasonably well so this will be our straightforward cover.

It is available signed by the following:

BC238LS - Jackie Charlton OBE

BC238AS2 - Single cover signed by: George Cohen MBE, Sir Geoff Hurst, Gordon Banks OBE, Alan Ball MBE, Nobby Stiles MBE, Jackie Charlton OBE, Roger Hunt MBE, Martin Peters MBE and Ray Wilson MBE.

BC238L5S - set of 5 covers each individually signed by: Gordon Banks OBE, Jackie Charlton OBE, Sir Geoff Hurst, Nobby Stiles MBE, and Martin Peters MBE.

40th Anniversary of England Winners 1966 - 2006

160 national teams compete in the World Cup Championship, but since the competition began in 1930, only eleven countries have made it to the finals, of which seven have had the honour of winning. Brazil is at the top of the list with five wins, then Italy and Germany, with three each, Uruguay and Argentina have two wins each and England and France just one.

Six of the seven past world championships have won while playing in their homeland. The only previous winner not to have won on home ground is the otherwise extremely successful Brazil, who famously lost the deciding match when they hosted the 1950 tournament. Even traditionally weaker nations have been successful during their spell as hosts, most recently South Korea in 2002.
