40th Anniversary of England Winners 1966 - 2006

160 national teams compete in the World Cup Championship, but since the competition began in 1930, only eleven countries have made it to the finals, of which seven have had the honour of winning. Brazil is at the top of the list with five wins, then Italy and Germany, with three each, Uruguay and Argentina have two wins each and England and France just one.

Six of the seven past world championships have won while playing in their homeland. The only previous winner not to have won on home ground is the otherwise extremely successful Brazil, who famously lost the deciding match when they hosted the 1950 tournament. Even traditionally weaker nations have been successful during their spell as hosts, most recently South Korea in 2002.
