Biography of Allan WilliamsAllan Williams was a former Liverpool businessman and promoter; original manager (or more accurately: booking agent) of The Beatles, who sent the young band to Hamburg, Germany, where they gained vital show business experience. Williams was the owner of two Liverpool clubs, the Blue Angel and the Jacaranda, which opened in 1957. The Beatles played there occasionally through the summer of 1960. Between May and August 1960, Williams secured regular work for the group. In August of 1960, Williams and The Beatles left "The Jac" in a small van which took John, Paul, George, Stu and Pete to Hamburg for the first time. He later fell out with the Beatles over the payment of his 10 per cent commission. When asked by Brian Epstein what he (Williams) thought of The Beatles, Williams reply was, "I wouldn´t touch them with an ´effin bargepole" (meaning that Epstein should stay as far away from them as possible.) Williams released "The Beatles Live!" in the mid 70s, which was recorded in the Star club in Hamburg, and in 1975 he wrote a book about the Beatles called "The Man Who Gave the Beatles Away". "The Man Who Gave The Beatles Away" is also a musical by Irish playwright Ronan Wilmot, which was performed at the New Theatre in Dublin in 2002. Williams’s life was transformed by his association with the Beatles; he is now a globe-trotting pensioner who speaks at many Beatles Conventions.
