Biography of Edgar MitchellIn 1971, Captain Edgar Mitchell joined on man's third lunar landing mission as a lunar module pilot on Apollo 14 (31st January-9th February 1971). It was his first space flight. With him were spacecraft commander Alan B. Shepard and Stuart A. Roosa, command module pilot. The pilots manoeuvred their lunar module, "Antares" to a landing in the hilly upland Fra Mauro region of the moon. Mitchell and Shepard collected nearly 100 pounds of lunar samples to bring back to Earth. They also activated various scientific equipment and experiments to help scientists learn more about the moon. Apollo 14 was the first time the Mobile Equipment Transporter (MET) was used. It was also the longest lunar surface stay time (33 hours) and longest distance traversed on the lunar surface. Captain Mitchell was in space for a total of 216 hours and 42 minutes on his first space flight. He was later chosen to be a backup lunar module pilot for Apollo 16.
