Great Eastern Railway - A Short History
In financial difficulties from the outset, the Great Eastern Railway was created on 7th August 1862 by an amalgamation of the Eastern Counties, Norfolk, Eastern Union, East Anglian, Newmarket and East Suffolk railways. Its association with an area rich in agriculture led to its nickname “The Swedey”.
With consistent direction, far-sighted marketing and unique engineering the railway was able to develop its East Anglian business far and wide. By 1900 its own port at Parkeston, shipping activities, a joint line to the North and a burgeoning suburban traffic in north-east London all led to a very healthy financial performance. Now the Great Eastern had its new terminus with the only hotel in the City of London – and boasted an office in New York!
The company is remembered for its vermillion-lined, ultramarine blue locomotives, seen in pristine condition at its Liverpool Street headquarters – and sometimes at St. Pancras. The engines were always identifiable by the “pish-tish” of their Westinghouse brake pumps. Coaches, brightly-coloured to enable class identification, led to the company’s well-known “Jazz” trains and a suburban traffic surpassed by none.
The Great Eastern Railway Society was formed in 1973 to promote a widespread interest in the Great Eastern Railway, to encourage and co-ordinate research into its history, and to provide a permanent record of the results.
