The Big Anniversaries of 2012

2012 is a landmark year for anniversaries for Britsh Railways, and our presentation sheet celebrates some of the more prominent ones, which will also be featuring in our rail series throughout the year.

• Brighton Belle - the only electric all-Pullman train in the world succeeded the steam service between London and Brighton. 2012 marks the 80th anniversary since its initial production in 1932, but also the 40th anniversary of its withdrawal from service.
• Railfest - Britain's biggest rail celebration, held by the National Railway Museum in York. This year Mallard will be one of the featured locomotives, and is featured in the background of the sheet.
• The Royal Train - it has been 170 years since Queen Victoria first used the Royal Train, and will again be used this year as part of Queen Elizabeth II's Jubilee celebrations.
• Great Eastern Railway - one of the big four celebrates its 150th anniversary this year.
• Grand Junction - the first long-distance railway line in the world, we celebrate the 175th anniversary of the opening of the Grand Junction Railway this year.
• Tay Bridge - the longest bridge in the world upon its completion in 1877, this year we mark the 135th year since a train first crossed the Tay Bridge.
• Euston Station - now the sixth busiest railway terminal in London, we mark the 175th anniversary of the opening of Euston Station.
• Middleton Railway - the world's oldest continuously working railway, 12 August marks the 200th anniversary of the introduction of steam to the railway.
• Class 47 Diesel - built in the 1900s with the objective of removing steam froom Britain's railways, the Class 47 Diesel turns 50 in September 2012.
• Kings Cross Station - 150 years since its opening Kings Cross is being restored and a new Western concourse will be open in 2012 in time for the 2012 Olympics.
