The Birth of the National Fire Service
70 years ago, the forerunner of our national fire service started. Fire was a more real threat for British people than perhaps at any other time. Air raids during the Second World War meant more fires than the small fire brigades run locally could cope with alone.
That's why the Auxiliary Fire Service (AFS) was formed. Within a few years it became the National Fire Service that we know today.
The tradition of courage in the face of fire, the bravery to risk one's own life to save others, these were not new. The local fire brigades had done sterling work in the face of horror for years. But AFS heralded a new age of fire fighting, allowing uniformity of basic equipment and training and a new height of professionalism.
It was a change that has saved thousands of lives.
And one we are proud to commemorate with our 70th anniversary collection, produced with the The Firefighters Memorial Trust and the Worshipful Company of Firefighters.
Heartstopping Commemoration
Our stamp sheet strikes at the heart, with an emotive sight of what our fire fighters have to face and why we need them so badly. The terror of the burning buildings, the rampaging fire, the frightened civilian - all in contrast to the calm, methodical courage of the fire fighters bringing the blaze under control.
Each cinderella stamp label shows a different vintage fire engine.
The Firefighters Memorial Trust logo is in the top right hand corner while the Worshipful Company of Firefighters logo is in the bottom left.
The sheet is being sold to help raise funds for the Firefighters Memorial Trust and the Worshipful Company of Firefighters.

All of our stamp sheets are available mounted, ready to frame. The mount is cream - nice and neutral, to work with your own colour scheme. It can be dropped into a standard 14x11 inch frame. The mounts are conservation quality and acid free. They are made especially for our stamp sheets and will not damage them over time if used as long-term storage. That means you can frame your sheets for the wall without risking your investment.
Signed Editions
This is a first for our signed editions: a double-signed sheet as standard! Since we are working jointly with the Firefighters Memorial Trust and the Worshipful Company of Firefighters - to choose a "main" signature would be to favour one over the other, which nobody wanted.
Instead we are delighted to have representatives from both organisations autographing our signed editions.
Both are very brave men in their own right and men who have made their own mark on the fire service today:
- Sir Ken Knight CBE QFSM DL - the first Chief Fire and Rescue Adviser
Sir Ken commenced his work with the fire service in Surrey in 1966 and has subsequently served in a number of other UK fire brigades before returning to London in 2003 as London's Fire Commissioner. He has been a key player in the UK Fire and Rescue Service for many years and was the national principal adviser on Fire and Rescue Service matters to the Local Government Association (LGA) and a Board member of the Chief Fire Officers' Association (CFOA).
Sir Ken was awarded the Queen's Fire Service Medal in 1991, the CBE in 2001, the Order of St John in 2005 and was appointed one of Her Majesty's Deputy Lieutenants of Greater London in May 2006. Sir Ken was knighted in the Queen's Birthday Honours the same year in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the fire and rescue service.
- Gerry Clarkson CBE QFSM BA (Hons) - former Chief Fire Officer of the London Fire Brigade
Gerry Clarkson is the founder Chairman of the Memorial Trust and the former Chief Fire Officer of the London Fire Brigade.

Raising funds for Fire Fighters
This project is raising funds for the Firefighters Memorial Charitable Trust. It was set up in 1990 and was responsible for the sighting of the National Memorial. The "Blitz Memorial", commissioned by the Founder Master of the Worshipful Company of Firefighters, is a tribute to the men and women of the United Kingdom Fire Service who lost their lives during the Second World War.
The Memorial is to the south of St Paul’s Cathedral, at the top of the new City Walkway - also approachable from the south bank of the Thames via the new Millennium Pedestrian Bridge.
They added the names of those lost in peacetime to the base in 2003 and it was re-dedicated to coincide with the Service of Remembrance in September 2003.
For many of us, images of the Firefighters at Ground Zero following the terrible events of 9/11 will be forever etched in our memories. Even now, stories still emerge about the bravery witnessed on that day. It was following this terrible event that the Government were approached to support a Firefighters Day of Remembrance to recognise the International nature of the Fire Service. The Trustees were asked to be the body for recognising such a day and in September, each year a Service of Remembrance is held, followed by a wreath laying ceremony a the memorial.
