Four Iconic Railway Covers

As with Royal Mail's Classic Locomotives of England issue of 2011, we have produced four separate covers for its Classic Locomotives of Scotland issue. Each cover features a set of four stamps torn from the miniature sheet, and each cover features background artwork showing the locomotive featured on one of the four stamps, created specially for us by the fantastic railway artist John Wigston. Each cover is cancelled with a specially designed postmark relevant to each locomotive, and limited numbers of each cover are available personally signed by the artist himself!

The Classic Locomotives of Scotland

Our first cover shows LNER and BR D34 Nos. 62471 & 62496 on the West Highland Line from Glasgow to Fort William and Mallaig on 09 May, 1959. The locomotives were built by the NBR at Cowlairs in 1920-21 to the design of W P Reid. The stamp has been cancelled with a specially designed Cowlairs, Glasgow postmark on the first day of issue.

Our second cover depicts former Great North of Scotland Railway No. 48 and LNER/BR Class D40 4-4-0 "Andrew Bain" in July 1950. The GNSR used 4-4-0s for most of its traffic, and "Andrew Bain" was built by the North British Locomotive Company to the design of T E Heywood. Our cover features a specially designed Kittybrewster, Aberdeen postmark on the first day of issue.

BC442C - Andrew Barclay No. 807

Third is our cover bearing the Andrew Barclay No. 807 locomotive. Andrew Barclay Sons and Company of Kilmarnock manufactured Industrial Locomotives, which could be found at collieries, shipyards and other industrial sites. Number 807, Bon Accord, was built in 1897 and belonged to the Aberdeen Gas Works and is seen working alongside Miller Street, Aberdeen in June 1962. The stamp has been cancelled with a specially designed Kilmarnock postmark.

BC442D - BR 4P

Last but not least is our cover depicting the BR 4P No. 54767, Clan Mackinnon at the Kyle of Lochalsh on a fish train. These locomotives were among the last Highland Railway locomotives to remain in active service, and were designed by Christopher Cumming and built by Hawthorn Leslie. Our cover has been cancelled with a specially designed postmark at Aviemore, Highland.
