Terence Cuneo's famous painting of the Duchess of Hamilton steams across the envelope. The set of ‘Classic Locomotives’ stamps was the most popular issue of 2004. Both mint stamps and first day covers have since become highly sought after by collectors.

Our cover was officially produced with the National Railway Museum. Their logo is emblazoned in gold blocking on the cover and is also on the official postmark.

History has proved this National Railway Museum cover to be one of our most popular ever, probably because it appeals to railway collectors as well as FDC collectors.

Signed Editions

Transport Secretary at the time, Alistair Darling, signed a limited number of these covers, and donated the money to Great Ormond Street Hospital. It brought the total we've raised for Great Ormond Street up to terrific £32,000.

Of course, Alistair Darling's career progressed significantly after that. He became Chancellor of the Exchequer in 2007, 2nd only to the Prime Minister.

While Transport Secretary, he oversaw the creation of Network Rail, abolished the Rail Regulator and replaced it with the Office of Rail Regulation and abolished the Strategic Rail Authority.
